Who do you know, or who have you met in your life.

just been watching Heartbeat and one of the songs that came up is one of my favourite songs of all time.....

I met the artist numerous times in  1978-1980 when I was teaching in Maidenhead. a colleague of mine and friends used to drink now and then in Windsor, and this man was a friend of that colleague. we used to share rounds and chat, and every ow and then, even though shy, he would hum a tune and we'd join in.

but I have never heard it sung so beautifully as with this person, whom I also loved as an artist in the 70's.

This song was always part of my own repertoire when I played the folk clubs. I also did another of his called "The Intergalactic Laxative" - of which the less said perhaps the better! I've heard/seen Donovan sing and been interviewed plenty of times and he's always struck me as one the clearest-thinking and beautifully-spoken people around.
The only folkie who comes even close is Al Stewart, whom I was chuffed to see get a Lifetime Achievement award at the BBC Folk thing recently. I never met Donovan but I did once get horribly drunk in the company of Mr Stewart and a bunch of lunatics called The Pigsty Hill Light Orchestra when I lived and worked in Bristol in the early 70's. Then there was Fred Wedlock...... o happy daze!

I have a cassette that I bought in the first couple of years of  my uni days....Best of Donovan......haven't been able to play it since they started putting CD players in cars........but what a great compilation it is.

And I cant even say Intergalactic Laxative without stumbling over it, never mind sing it, but he is a gem. it still says he is active on the scene, but I've not seen him tour in years, sadly.

Ross Wilson ans Ross Hanaford of Daddy cool fame after our Jailhouse rock dance closed a bunch of us hired a hall and one of us knew Ross so were hired them unbeknown to us the band was called the sons of the vegetal mother damned hippy bunch after an hour of this garbage music they saw they were about to get bashed up they switched to Daddy who Daddy cool they change name a week later and released their first album.

then there was the time when I was run over by Barry Sheene.

was at the press day of the motor show the year that bazza had had his near fatal accident on his Soozie.........

was watching a display of ladies strutting their stuff on the Porker stand wen my foot was run over by a heavy object.

I looked down and there was Barry in his wheelchair......

he looked up at me and said "sorry mate, haven't got used to 4 wheels yet!, mind you, [slapping the leg with all the steel rods and bolts attached too]..........I haven't gotten used to 2 f*****g wheels either."

we both laughed uncontrollably as I said....."keep practicing mate"......we shook hands and went our separate ways.
