| Neil To try and put it briefly, Photobucket is a photo-hosting website where you could post and save your digital photos and share them with anyone you chose to allow access. It also included an option to link them to other websites, so if you wanted to put a photo on here then instead of duplicating the whole image file (and taking up unnecessary space on the forum's file server) it would instead save only a short "link" to the Photobucket image. All of this was free of charge to the users until June this year. Now that everyone and his dog has a smart-phone and takes pictures of every damn thing in their sad, miserable little lives to 'share' with others on Farcebook or whatever, the amount of storage space required has increased astronomically. To cover the cost of this Photobucket have now introduced a charge for linking images to third-party sites like forums. I'm not sure but I think it's either $40/month or $100/year i.e. not chicken-feed. Furthermore, where someone fails to pay the new fees then all links to their past images are removed. The prospect is that forums etc will be left with acres of empty space where images used to be. What use is a build-blog without pictures? That's what Mike means by blackmail. For users of this forum I would strongly recommend inserting the photos directly into their posts. It's a small but select forum (??!!) and file storage space should be more than adequate for the relatively small number of photos which appear. I'm sure that The Boss would let us know if the costs suddenly went skywards - well, quickly enough for an injection of funds to keep it afloat. As someone once said, there's no such thing as a free lunch.
Now back to the doyen of model lifeboat builders...

I pay for add free photobucket and have done for a while now, I get 23GB and I think it's under £20 a year, not a lot of dosh in the grand scheme of things really, pay by standing order and don't even notice the payment. I think it's a little peace of mind knowing that your beloved photos are securely stored, we can't blame Photobucket for charging if all these idiots are using up all the space that they are for such carp places like Farcebook and Twatter. | |

| Paul Does that also cover the new charge for linking photos to third-party websites like this one? If I were you I'd double-check. Dave M | |

| Paul I read that as being option 'Plus 500' for any amount of third-party hosting - which apparently is what I was talking about (not just "linking"). That's $399.99/year (approx £307). Mayhem is alight with correspondence about this. There may be someone on there who actually knows what's going on as a stone-cold fact, but they're all fired up with righteous indignation about it. Given that image files from phones and cameras are now into double-digit megabytes you can almost sympathise with PB. When we all started playing with our first digital cameras and Photobucket started their business I don't suppose anyone could forsee the rapid increase in the quantity of storage and bandwidth needed. What was that again about a free lunch? Oy veh... DM
Sorry Mike. End of. | |

| Just a note, the forum has its own phothosting, which is freely available to you guys which is also paid for by the forum. It is limited in its abilitys but It's free and your photos can only be accessed by yourself, all the photos you upload are locked to your account as well as being copyrighted, you can also used the photo links for other sites.
For those of you who are having issues with other hosts or don't wish to payout for something the forums host is there for your unlimited use. _________________ I'm Not Anti-Social, I'm Anti-Stupid.
