| Hi All, Been looking through this site, really good and given me some "Inspiration" for Marina II, don't know when I'll get on to this, but, I'd love to actually get something "Operational" if you know what I mean. I still have my A/L Sanson to complete. (My Modus Operandi is to complete one thing at a time, otherwise I loose my focus....) I'll share this with you all soon enough, I have embellished Sanson with "Hi Intensity LED's. Anyway, this is not about Sanson but my "Fun" with Pen Duick. It started out really well but I got into issues when I spayed the wrong Lacquer onto by completed Hull. The paint under the lacquer "Crazed," sanded back, re-spayed, (No Lacquer), same thing.... Not wishing to throw it all away, I removed every scrap of paint and Lacquer!! Re-sprayed the Hull and a little more success, no lacquer this time.... Kit Sails were wanting also, they were beautifully "Pre-Sewn" but the Main Sail was not long enough by about 20.mm for Gaff and Boom, height was good. Jib, Flying Jib and Foresail also need some modification/re-stitching. Photos of the build: | |

| So, There you go, something that I had hoped for a two to three month build turned into a six month build, never mind. My first attempt at Sails also. I've got some Cabinet photos somewhere.... Again, required Seismic Bracing, Screws in the Wall/Skirting and rear of cabinet with, (Hopefully,) some really strong Nylon Rope. Cheers....HOF. | |

| I was in Bordeaux a couple of years ago when all the Pen Duicks came sailing up the river - quite a sight . The model looks very good. I found the AL kit very good to build and I see you quite like them . Barrie | |

| Thanks Barrie, Would have loved to see that!! I have to settle with stuff on the internet, unfortunately.... Yup, A/L is a brand I am familiar with but now, unfortunately, seems lacking in quality. (The Chinese Manufacturer?) I don't know, I do however enjoy making things better with these Kits.... Cheers and Regards, Harry. | |

| It’s always a toss up in these kits today the quality of the wood has gone down hill dramatically, now it’s either cost saving methods to up profit margins on the kits ( which is my primary thought) however it could also be that wood in these kits isn’t aged as well, this in turn leaves the wood very, well poor! I’ve found many kits of this type I’ve done from New marquis, and even some of the newer Dumas kits suffer with this problem, to which in a couple of cases I’ve had to buy all new top quality ply and strip woods and remake everything from scratch using the kit as a template,on thing I have found as I do build a lot slower that many of these kits sit in storage for many years at a time and when I go to build them the wood has settled much better as it has some age and he builds go together with relativity fewer issues. Of course for those who buy a kit to build straight away this becomes a huge issue as your fighting the materials, and like I said before are forced to struggle or buy good quality materials to replace, I guess my slow progression on projects helps me as I usually buy 2 or 3 kits a year and have a vast collection of projects either unbuilt or partially started and put down because of such issues but returning to them a couple of years later the issues are pretty much gone. At present I have 4 outstanding projects to finish all in the later stages of paint or glass work, but close to the end, and I have a further 12 kits outstanding to start along with 2 scratch build projects starting within the next few months. But it looks like your made a grand job of your models and look forward to you sharing a working model with us at some point, if you need help with animating the models feel free to ask for help there’s are many members who know electronics to scary level and some who do crazy things most think are impossible like me Regards RR _________________ I'm Not Anti-Social, I'm Anti-Stupid.

| I've missed this build for some reason, but I'm glad I have just seen it. ...…….that is a beautiful model, beautiful woodworking...……
I can't' even get a grp hull that smooth, never mind a plank on frame..
superb finish. I hope its given you an appetite for more builds. |

| Thanks Gentlemans!! Nice progress thus far Steve, looks pretty good to me. I guess mistakes are inevitable but a good test of perseverance/patience.... Right, the Green Hull color is one of these "Vallejo" Model Air paints: Verde Acorazado 71.014 Cam. Light Green Cam. Verde Claro 71.006 Gunship Green From memory, it's the latter: Cam.Verde Claro 71.006 Gunship GreenUpper Hull: Tamiya Matt Black (Rattle Can)Water Line: Tamiya Matt White (Rattle Can)(These come out more of a Satin finish than Matt)Once I had Planked and Sanded the Hull, I used an "Automotive" Spay Putty followed by Primer.Don't make the mistake of a "Hot" Lacquer over the Top Coat, I did and the finish "Crazed" after a day or two curing.(Took a lot of re-work, (Sanding), to get rid of the Lacquer which had penetrated to the Planking....) I suggest either leave the finish Matt or experiment with shiny stuff off the model. If I can assist with anything, drop me a line.Cheers and Regards,Harry. (HOF) | |
