Hello Swab glad to see your back in the workshop .
Cant offer any constructive help as the appearance is a subjective thing , and to my knowledge the barrels art specifically designed to the purpose you are seeking .....so unless you have a photo of purpose made drag barrels I wouldn't fret to much , detail is perfection I agree but there is a cut off point some where .......it all looks realistic to me , but what do I know I'm only an ex diver anyway Martens gear to see your craftsmanship at full throttle ......take care and take it easy pal .....

Hi Swab,
Thank you for mentioning about nameplates. I think that is a great idea and is what i will do for my boat instead of trying to spray it on the hull. Thank you.
Shame about the phone and photos.

Barrels in progress I'm happier with these they will never be perfect like the 3D printed versions but Barrie did me proud by pointing these out I'm not willing to put £150.00 plus on the deck of this boat.

Swab, They look better without that gloss shine. Well done. Maybe a little staining in the ropes.

Don't forget I'm building a replica of a film set and the set designers made some mistakes they weathered the boat but a lot of fittings were new. I'm going to stain the ropes because you've noticed they look too new so where you noticed others will on the 'real' boat most of the the ropes were new so I totally agree they look daft. In real life Quint would have left a big unpaid bill at the chandlers! I've just ordered some LEDS and a power supply to light it up this build is slowing up as work is becoming a bit oppressive of late.

Hi Swab, It is very annoying when work keeps getting in the way. What sort of lighting system have you ordered. Do you have a photo or link to it that we can see ?

LEDs no resistors needed as I'm using a voltage reducer I've no photos yet but I'll take some as I go.

I am thinking of using one on my Guardsman to save room

I've ordered one of these from Component shop as it came recommended from someone at Bournville. https://www.componentshop.co.uk/voltage-reducer-with-led-display-input-3-5v-30v-output-1-2v-30v.html Also after a bit of research i.e. I watched Jaws with a couple of cans i realised the stern nameplate I'd cut was wrong so off it come and I've cut new letters, the font is correct but the size is a bit over but I'm using artistic licence as I want the name to stand out and I'm going to batter the stern and hull up and the thin veneer wouldn't take knocking it up convincingly. First set of LEDS came today I'll be wiring up and doing first fix soon.

Lights, camera, action! yes they're too bright I'll tone them down and add a creamish tint with some Tamiya clear colour. 3 volt led's run from an adjustable power supply and a 7.4 volt battery should give a decent light up time. It's our illuminated Regatta on Saturday but the forecast is dreadful i may give it a run but I'm not sure the deck is watertight enough.

They're too bright I've toned them down a bit there's a hefty layer of dust since I have packed it in I need to do some vacuuming if I ever bother to finish it.

A little jigging with the rigging it needs toning down in colour but at least I've took another step to finishing off I've tested it in the bath and it's ballasted quite neatly to a decent level with no leaks.

It's the daft scale 1/14th is so awkward to find anything without scratchbuilding and scrounging 3D printing is an alternative but the price is prohibitive.

Given that not everyone is exactly the same height etc, I find that you can be bit flexible in the scale if you can find the correct pose.

Either side of 1/14th is 1/12th - too big even a figure who's made to be shorter than average and limited choice available & 1/16th large choice as it happens (increasingly popular armour & R/C tank scale) but I've tried to find a figure i can chop about who doesn't appear a bit on the short size on the boat. Plus I want a anatomically correct looking figure that's my fault entirely as I'm a massive pain in the proverbial so the wife tells me. Plus this figure is a challenge and that gets me fired up more than anything I'm determined to make it look as good as I can.

I've got permission from management I'm sailing this tomorrow and I'll post a few more pictures. There is some minor touches to complete and I may add a few details in the future but I've frankly had enough and want to call it quits on this build which was my first total scratchbuild, first plank on frame, & first wooden boat. I'm timing it at 18 months total time which if I spent more than an hour here and there would have gone quicker. I decided categorically I was not doing any more boats but I've mellowed so on to the next build soon. More and last pics tomorrow when you can call it done.

Bad luck. I also didn't get to the lake today. Not the weather here but Covid. We had our booster jabs yesterday and could hardly move this morning
I may try to get to our other lake on Thursday, if I've recovered.

It finally sails!!!!! It ran really well and tracks absolutely straight going ahead a bit wayward astern as it's a flat transom. One problem as you see from the photos is it's bow heavy entirely my fault I need a better test tank as it's not the best and I doubled the battery size and didn't re ballast it again - bad oversight really.

I'm calling this finished there's bits and bobs may crop up but nothing major, she steers beautifully even at minimum speed astern is a different matter the square transom doesn't help. The ballasting is spot on now and rides waves well, when the wind hits side on it really does go astray - practically sideways. So 1st plank on frame, 1st scratch build, 1st wooden boat, 1st fully lit by LED all in all massively enjoyable, frustrating, but ultimately rewarding model I've built. I was totally burnt out by it but that's passed Waverley is proving to be an Interesting challenge albeit more demanding in accuracy than what really is a film set. x
