I read in an article some years ago that there are ( believe it or not, and I found it staggering)  an estimate of over 1.5 million ship wrecks around the world dating back from recorded times in both the Greek Roman and post dark ages when records were reasonably scribed. there are an estimated 110,000 around the shores of the UK since the recordings began in pre Norman conquest times...............just an absolutely mind boggling total.
