Hi all,
There is a chance I regret it but my first tilt into the rc model world is the below plan and hull set, a fairly modern tug. So as the hull is already done I'm only working on it's inside and then from the deck up (we'll not consider the running gear at this point). What material would be best for the afore mentioned wood or styrene?? If wood what sort? Cheers, Murphy

That's a challenging model! My preference is plasticard, but that's because I'm not very good at woodwork Also plasticard is easier to finish - no filling and sanding. If you have been building static models I guess you are pretty confident working in wood, so that may be abetter option for you.

hi, i would go for 1.5 mm birch ply or 1mm, most of my builds i have used this. also big lover of using card same thickness.
all 1.5 mm ply
cabin fixed together used some balsa as well all deck 1.5mm birch ply
all done and painted. hope this helps look at some of my other builds

Thanks guys for your input.
I like the idea of plastic card but wasn't sure if it was too light. In terms of using wood I'm guessing I will need to seal it prior to painting to protect it from the water. Is that correct? And would I use some kind of polyurethane or polyester resin?
In terms of a challenging project that's a bugger ( not really what I wanted to hear), but that's the story of my life having had done 20years in the military. And please don't tell my wife I told her it would be no worries and cheap .
Cheers, Murphy

I've now looked more closely at your model. I see its a Vic Smeed design. That means it should have full details for the modeller. It will have been designed for wood I guess, but Plastic card wont be too light - 1 or 1.5 mm will be fine. If you use wood it will need sanding sealer before painting. No need for resin on the superstructure.

Hi all,
Never let it be said that I second guess myself........................... Wait I'm second guessing myself. As this will be my first purchase, I'm also quite taken by the hull and plan set of a Tyne class Life Boat by David Metcalf. And seen as David has been kind enough to post some stunning pics to this thread, would it be a more appropriate choice ???
Happy not to buy set until we have had a chance to discuss.
Cheers, Murphy

Murphy,
I am not familiar with either of the two subjects so hesitate to comment. However, I am pretty sure that if you choose the lifeboat, in addition to the plan and hull you should be able to find back copies of Model Boats magazine with Dave Metcalf's original build articles which will be a help if you get stuck. You will also have davijt available via this forum to offer advice.

hi murphy, as for building the tyne i would go for that the plans three times cut once from birch ply, as you will find you can bend it in warm water and not delaminate it. i built the whole thing from the hull, plank on frame to the figures i modified. all planks i cut to size myself. i built my tyne in 2009. i thought i put it on here but was mistaken, as i lost the u s b that i stored all of my build on. i have since found it but never shown it any where. i have the magazines scand so if you do get this model i can email the build to you. i will help you in any way i can. it does have some hard bits but i think we can get you to the end. i am not perfect but i am happy with how it turned out we all have to start some where . please do have a look at some other models before you decide . my first build was a pilot boat from marine modeling international january 2003, this was quit an easy build to start with but i built mine from scratch if you want you can get the hull ready made from sarik .
this is a nice boat the first i ever built in 2003 i can scan you the magazine if you like it.i built it with 1.5mm birch ply hope i have not made it harder for you to decide but do look around.

Thanks David/Barrie for your support.
The weather in my part of Australia today was about 1000 degrees c, so in an attempt to hide from the heat i sat inside watching YouTube. I stumbled across the Solomon Brown Penlee Life Boat disaster and was in awe at the courage of those volunteers.
Having said that i have chosen and ordered the Tyne class Life Boat (ok so it's nota Watson class). David i would very much appreciate anything you could send me so i can study it while i wait for the set to be delivered.
To all on the forum i thank you in advance as any advice provided during the build will be warmly received.
Cheers, Murphy

David - it could be a limitation on Murphy's mail box. Try sending them to me. If they get here I might be able to 'shrink' them.

David i received two e-mail they come through nicely and more importantly i could enlarge them. Using a high resolution image generally means you can't send too many attachments per email. Maybe reduce the amount of attachments sent each time. Thanks mate
