Hi Mark,

just counted up the stanchions and to be on the safe side I would need approximately 70 -75 stanchions in total, but could make use of the white metal ones or even the plastic ones I made for the under side on the car deck if that many were not available.

Many thanks if you can come close as they would be a fantastic help.

cheers, neil.

I have gone the etched brass route for mine - but they are at 1:96, so unfortunately they wont be any good to you. Otherwise I would have gladly let you have as many as you needed.

Glad it's all sorted mate Thumbup

Was down in sunny Cornwall this weekend and paid a visit to our friend Mick. Actually, I dropped him off a dirty great aircraft carrier that he had is eye on a while back.  I bought it with all good intentions, but now, realising that I wouldn't get the time to do it justice, I gave him first refusal.  So now he has another bloody great ship to find room for!!!!!!!

Mind you, he has some lovely lifeboat models taking up space in the garage!!!!!

He sends his regards 2thumbsup

this certainly isn't going to set the modelling world aflame, but sadly haven't had any time to do any modelling lately......but managed to grab a few minutes this evening and put the basics of the main mast together. might even get round to fine detailing on the mast later.

at the moment I am steeling time as a lot is going on with kids off on school hols, just getting their exam results and applying for further education, so the little bit I am getting done is on a work board on my knee. but last night I cracked on with fitting out the two ships boats.

I am building her as when these where part of the fittings and fixtures rather than later when they were replaced by a Rib and liferaft canisters.
I made the little shells some time ago from finishing resin and surface tissue grp..............and last night started by making templates for the bottom boards and then wt end boxes and side boards, thwarts and tops of lateral seats...........

sadly I ran out of superglue and have only dry fitted the furnishings for the transom ended boat..........but you get the gist of what has ben done. I used 1.5mm ply for the fitting out.

can't believe how long it has been since I last got time to do anything to this model with all the other stuff I have had to do........and in the last few months I have used my workshop as a dumping ground for other rubbish that needed sorting........

well, this afternoon I sorted it all..........most went into the trash bin and left me with some space to actually sort the stuff out ready for building.

So, I got down to it, and firstly sanded the areas I had filled about the drop ramps, then I finished off the inner fittings of the two lifeboats, and then finally got down to putting onto the bulwark tops the capping rails.......made from 1.5mm ply.

and tonight I am going to sort out the myriads of fittings that I am going to use on the ship and put those to one side and the rest in containers.......might even have time for a beer,lovely.....

feel so much more relaxed that I have actually got down to something even as little as it is..........it's a start.......the capping rails will then be sanded down to a uniform width later by hand rather than using a sander as I don't want the vibration to loosen the rail from the bulwarks.

I have been making the cages for storing tools and rubbish under the boat deck and also making the safety mesh panels for the passenger access areas. Also made the access doors and glued the cages onto this.
For the mesh I used a very small mesh embroidery mesh obtainable at any haberdashery.

Hi Neil,
I had wondered what had happened to this build,as I hadnt seen it for a long while. Now that I have got over theshock of you saying youhad cleaned your shed out!!!,I can say that I hope to be following the progress in future. It is looking great so far.
By the way what surprises did you uncover in your shed? Long lost chuck keys? Allan Keys? I bet there were some forgotten treasures!!!
Keep up the good work my friend!

after a week of nightly sanding I have de-flashed de-seamed and trimmed up the multitude of fittings that go to detail the model........took a while a sore back and fingers and more than a couple of beers but I had got there eventually.

and now it's down to positioning the fittings on and around the lower deck first so that I can get the next deck in place.

First thing are the vehicle securing plates. These were fitted to the deck to allow strops to be tied around the wheels and axles of the vehicles to the deck in very rough passages.

the small square castings represent those tie location places.

Next is the Quadra legged main mast.

This is going to be fabricated from 4 different diameters of brass tubing and brass rod.......all silver soldered together on a jig.

then it was just a case of jigging up the brass rod and silver soldering all the bits together.

and the bit I had been dreading most was actually done in an hour.

I'll clean it up tomorrow and then give it a bath in hot soapy water before washing again with thinners.

hi Paul.........she's 59 inches long by 12" [ I think] beam

cheers guys.  getting a bit more done these days now all the resin cast fittings are cleaned n ready to paint, and that main mast was the next hurdle but it went together very easily.

I find silver soldering far easier than soft solder and cleans off just as easily with diamond tipped needle files as they don't clog up  like soft solder does.

Cheers Paul...........yes it is rather big...........I must stop building so big.............nowhere to put them soon, lol.

Anyway did a little more this afternoon.

I realised after looking at photos of the ship last night that it has cross members running beam to beam on the mast and so set about this afternoon cutting more materials for these. after measuring I made up ( what can only be called a brain fart) two sets of these frames........Don't know why because I only need 1 of each frame)

I then jigged them all up and silver soldered them together and then soldered to the mast, which makes it now a very sturdy piece.

the last shot shows the two extra cross frames........anyone building a Jupiter, lol

the old girl is now beginning to look like a ship rather than a few higgledy piggledy pieces of ply and grp...with the main mast assembly now in place where it should be the model is, like the real ships long gone, beginning to warm on me.

today has been a day of adding fittings to the inside and outside of the hull readying for eventual painting of the hull, bulwarks and decks so that I can put onto the decks the fittings for vents lockers etc...........but all has to go on in order.

and so it was adding port holes hawse hole fittings and base plates for locating the main mast..

All of these were resin fittings made previously and cast in the rubber moulds previously shown.

Bow port holes:Jupiter, a Caledonian macBrayne Ferry - Page 7 Img_0137

Bow hawse hole surrounds:Jupiter, a Caledonian macBrayne Ferry - Page 7 Img_0138

aft deck hawse holes inner and outer fittings.Jupiter, a Caledonian macBrayne Ferry - Page 7 Img_0140

mast base plates, and with mast fitted, note that the upright legs have also been sheathed with ally (aluminium) tubing to bring it into the same diameter as the bottom legs of the mast.Jupiter, a Caledonian macBrayne Ferry - Page 7 Img_0142

Jupiter, a Caledonian macBrayne Ferry - Page 7 Img_0143

and finally a couple of general views as the fittings blend it to the general aura of the ship.

I think the only way is to hit the X in top right corner of the post & delete the post and start again.
Although as it's your post you should be able to delete from the edit function.

As I delve deeper into this vessel, more and more small fittings come to life. Last night I started getting the mushroom vents ready for under the first shelter deck and ended up with constructing some ladders for the funnels and the steps up to the funnel casing top..
These were made from pre constructed Plastruct ladders and a little plasticard.
The top rails for the main ladders was made from thin slices of the remains of a roller blind bottom rail that I have had for years just waiting for something to crop up ...........and voila'...the hand rails for the top of the ladders.

All other attachments was made from old scraps of plasticard of varying thicknesses.

then it was down to putting hinges and door handles onto the wooden doors for under the shelter decks.........made from brass wire. the insets ( which would be glass on the real ship) will be painted before gluing to the bulkheads

Finally for today it was down to fitting a small fillet of ply into the access hole for the companionways from the first deck to the car deck. I had made these too long to give the companionways the correct angle to get the vents under the starboard side companionway anda fillet 9mm wide needed gluing in.

|It is now all set and the companionway is set to the right angle.
